Chapter One — The procedure

A market price records an exchange between participants with different constraints. The useful question is whose constraint appears in the quote and which public record supports the explanation.

Systematic work begins by defining the question, defining what counts as evidence, and recording the procedure before reading the outcome. The order matters because memory edits a process after the result is known.

Much of the work is bookkeeping. The bookkeeping preserves dates, source language, and the size of each uncertainty so that a later reader can reconstruct the record.

The research advantage often sits in work that is dull, repeatable, and reviewable.

Neutrality is not the absence of a view. It is the discipline of holding a view at the same size as the documented evidence and naming what remains unresolved.

A schedule change in a trade agreement is an ordinary example. The document is public, the affected categories are measurable, and the counterparties are named, but the annexes still require patient reading.
